Escape velocity & orbital velocity – Relation & calculation

The general formula to calculate escape velocity is:

v = √(2gR)

where g = 9.8 m/s^2 and R is the radius of Earth which is 6.4 x 10^6 m. Calculation of the above equation provides the result 11200 m/s, which can be written as 11.2 km/s.

Now the formula for orbital velocity is similar but without the 2 in the root. It is:

v = √gR

Calculation of the above equation provides the result 7919 m/s, which can be written as 8 km/s.
